A well awaited match and it’s
proceedings started earlier than ususal, when all the ASCRUM lads had
to meet in the clubhouse of their rivals, the biker mice from mars (AAC).
As the opponents came in one by one on their motorcycles, the ASCRUM arsenal arrived in style. . sporting numerous transportation devices such as their legs, trapfietse, and some even decided to roll from the bar across town and into the clubhouse.
It was decided that the game
would be played on the half mast pitch of AAC, after one of their
posts had been blown off by a freakishly strong backfire from an AAC
scooter. With a little bit of glue and innovation from the home side,
they erected the broken post to add another 0.5m of leng and now also
girth to the post. The referee quickly checked the studs of the player
during their warmups and the game was on. ASCRUM seemed to start with a vurious pace, as Sam found a little bit of space in the midfield, and used his strength and newly developed sidestep to beat 3 opponents and score within the first 5 minutes. The ASCRUM boys were eager for a W, and everyone could feel it. The tight 5 handled kick-offs superbly and the loose forwards linked well with some of the backs and especially with Robbert the ASRUM fly half. There was a comedy of errors towards the end of the 1st half, as the ASCRUM lads started to play more 50 / 50 passes than usual and this was accompanied by AAC injury tea times. As half time approached the team got together and the captain Jacob instructed the lads to stick to gameplan, as it would be good practise for more challenging matches in future. The 3 South Africans slotted in well with the originating ASCRUM side. From 9-15 it seemed to click and when ball was allowed to the back it seemed to nearly always end with a try or at least 50m gained. Well done to the forwards for securing ball and setting up a good platform for the backs to attack from. This week ahead: Tuesday there will be training at museum square at 5.45pm till 7 so please come and join if you can. Wednesday: training as ususal, but there will be emphasis on interplay and attack while still brushing up on defensive patterns and running lines. Friday there will be rucking and mauling followed by lineouts to backplay separated by skill drills and games. More structure which we saw a couple of times during the match on Sunday when AAC had to drop 22 will also be covered. Well done ASCRUM . . . .the first of many. |
